Managing Your Pain After Surgery

Doctor talking to a little girl in a wheelchair holding a teddy bear to help her manage her pain after surgery Your comfort is important to us. We want you to be as comfortable as possible with adequate pain relief and minimal side effects from pain medication. We will make every effort to reduce pain, but cannot guarantee that you will be pain-free.

Pain management is an ongoing process that requires open communication between you and your health care team. Pain medication is given using different methods, depending on your condition. Your doctor or nurses will discuss what method is best for you.

If you experience pain while in the hospital, please let us know, so it can be managed as quickly as possible. Please do not wait until your need is urgent before you call a nurse.

At the time of discharge, you will be given prescriptions for pain medicine. When you need a refill of your prescription, please call during normal office hours, Monday through Friday. Requests for pain medication refills on nights/weekends/holidays cannot be honored, so please plan ahead.
