Maria
Fracture, Infection, Malunion Maryland & Italy Dr. Conway
Maria was born and raised in southern Italy and visits her family there a few months each year. Last August, while doing some light paint touch-ups at her home in Italy, she lost her balance and fell, resulting in a broken femur. She had surgery at a local hospital, but it was a very painful and grueling recovery. For over a month, she was confined to her bed as it was too painful to stand, and she had a fever that would not break.
Her daughters traveled from the U.S. to help care for her. Maria shares, “The pain and discomfort were overwhelming, leaving me feeling hopeless at times. My daughters researched medical options and discovered Dr. Conway. Unfortunately, the doctors in Italy wouldn’t allow me to travel in my condition and repeatedly denied that I had an infection. Eventually, they prescribed antibiotics that my body did not respond to, and my fever persisted.”
Maria’s daughters found a medical transport company to help her return to Maryland. After a difficult journey, they landed in the U.S. and headed straight to Sinai Hospital for urgent treatment to save Maria’s leg. Dr. Conway treated her infection and replaced the rod from her original surgery which was not helping the bone heal properly.
“Dr. Conway worked tirelessly to treat my infection. It has been a long and challenging journey, and I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Conway for her expertise and care; without her, I might not be here today. Now, I can walk again, enjoy life, play with my grandchildren, and even return to Italy, walking with both feet firmly on the ground.”
